Germination Speeds of Exotic Annual and Native Perennial Grasses in California and the Potential Benefits of Seed Priming for Grassland Restoration

چکیده

Many western grasslands and scrublands are being overrun by Mediterranean annual grasses that are a limiting impediment to grassland restoration throughout the western United States (Kay et al. 1981; Dyer and Rice 1997, 1999; Brown and Rice 2000). Conserving and restoring these invaded ecosystems are important biodiversity goals. Restoring perennial grasslands can also increase the forage quality of these systems (Menke 1992; Stromberg and Kephart 1996).

Invasion, competitive dominance, and resource use by exotic and native California grassland species.

The dynamics of invasive species may depend on their abilities to compete for resources and exploit disturbances relative to the abilities of native species. We test this hypothesis and explore its implications for the restoration of native ecosystems in one of the most dramatic ecological invasions worldwide, the replacement of native perennial grasses by exotic annual grasses and forbs in 9.2...

California native and exotic perennial grasses differ in their response to soil nitrogen, exotic annual grass density, and order of emergence Citation

49 Early emergence of plant seedlings can offer strong competitive advantages over 50 later-germinating neighbors through the preemption of limiting resources. This 51 phenomenon may have contributed to the persistent dominance of European annual 52 grasses over native perennial grasses in California grasslands, since the former 53 species typically germinate earlier in the growing season than ...

Reducing Competitive Suppression of a Rare Annual Forb by Restoring Native California Perennial Grasslands

Populations of the rare annual forb Amsinckia grandiflora may be declining because of competitive suppression by exotic annual grasses, and may perform better in a matrix of native perennial bunchgrasses. We conducted a field competition experiment in which Amsinckia seedlings were transplanted into forty 0.64-m 2 experimental plots of exotic annual grassland or restored perennial grassland. Th...

Seed banks of native forbs, but not exotic grasses, increase during extreme drought.

Extreme droughts such as the one that affected California in 2012-2015 have been linked to severe ecological consequences in perennial-dominated communities such as forests. In annual communities, drought impacts are difficult to assess because many species persist through facultative multiyear seed dormancy, which leads to the development of seed banks. Impacts of extreme drought on the abunda...

Control of Exotic Annual Grasses to Restore Native Forbs in Abandoned Agricultural Land

Exotic annual grasses are a major challenge to successful restoration in temperate and Mediterranean climates. Experiments to restore abandoned agricultural fields from exotic grassland to coastal sage scrub habitat were conducted over two years in southern California, U.S.A. Grass control methods were tested in 5 m2 plots using soil and vegetation treatments seeded with a mix of natives. The t...
